Các tác giả đã sử dụng kỹ thuật yeast two-hybrid để xác định rằng AFP tương tác với thụ thể hexamerin, một protein đóng vai trò quan trọng trong quá trình thu nhận hexamerin vào tế bào tuyến mỡ. AFP được phát hiện có ái lực liên kết mạnh mẽ với các đoạn cắt của tiền chất thụ thể hexamerin, đặc biệt là peptide P30. Biểu hiện của AFP mRNA và protein được giới hạn ở phần trước của mô tuyến mỡ và các tế bào máu ở ấu trùng cuối kỳ. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy AFP có thể đóng vai trò trong việc điều hòa sự thu nhận hexamerin của tế bào tuyến mỡ dọc theo trục trước-sau.
