A study on mnemonic techniques to help students of grade 6 increase their vocabulary retention at a secondary school

Author: Le Thuy Duong

Field: English Linguistics

Content: This study investigates the effectiveness of mnemonic techniques, including the use of pictures, semantic mapping, and story creation, in improving vocabulary retention among 6th-grade students. Conducted over seven weeks with 40 students who had previously experienced difficulties in memorizing English vocabulary, the research employed both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires, and classroom observations. The findings indicate a significant improvement in vocabulary retention after the intervention with mnemonic techniques, with students demonstrating a more positive attitude towards learning vocabulary. The study also offers implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research.
