Image Quality and Radiation Dose Comparison of a Computed Radiography System and an Amorphous Silicon Flat Panel System in Paediatric Radiography: A Phantom Study

Author: M.A. Irvine

Field: Master of Applied Science

Document Content: This study investigates the patient radiation doses and image quality of a Philips/Agfa computed radiography (CR) system and a Philips indirect-capture digital radiographic (DR) system within a pediatric setting. A CDRAD digital radiographic contrast-detail phantom, combined with Perspex slabs to simulate patient dimensions, was utilized to evaluate the imaging performance of both systems. The research involved imaging these phantoms under various conditions and employing the CDRAD Analyser software for objective image quality assessment, thereby minimizing human subjectivity and labor. Experiments were conducted under standard conditions and in simulated routine clinical practice. The findings suggest that a Philips flat-panel system demonstrates superiority over an Agfa CR system in pediatric radiography, a conclusion that aligns with previous studies involving adult patients.
